The Mexican Senate recognized the Armenian Genocide. This was reported by Sputnik Armenia with reference to the press service of the Armenian Embassy in Mexico.
It is noted that the authors of the document refer to the need for fundamental protection of human rights. At the same time, the Senate calls on the Secretariat for Foreign Relations to promote the recognition of the Armenian Genocide by Mexico at the state level, the Armenian diplomatic mission reports.
EADaily recalls that the Armenian Genocide in Ottoman Turkey is recognized by Russia, France, Germany, Austria, USA, Italy, Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Syria, Lebanon and a number of other countries and organizations. The Armenian Genocide was also recognized by some Turkish writers and researchers, for example, Orhan Pamuk And Taner Akcam.
Turkey is extremely negative about such actions, denying the fact of the genocide of the Armenian population at the state level. At the same time, the author of the term “genocide” Rafael Lemkin noted that he studied the Armenian genocide and the Holocaust.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry has already strongly condemned the decision of the Mexican Senate:
“The resolution passed by the Mexican Senate on February 8, 2023 declaring the events of 1915 a “genocide” is a failed attempt to rewrite history with political motives. We reject and strongly condemn this decision. We remind you that legislatures do not have the power to interpret and judge history.”
