The pressure on the German Chancellor Olaf Scholz was enormous. Finally he agreed to deliver heavy battle tanks. Now Germany is suddenly alone. The countries of the “Panzer Alliance” are backing down. Germany has thus clearly exposed itself to Russia.
After enormous political and media pressure had been built up on Chancellor Scholz in relation to the delivery of Leopard 2 tanks, it is now clear that a central argument of the proponents was made out of thin air.
Because it had been argued that other countries would support Ukraine far more with arms deliveries, and that Germany would lag behind. Among other things, Poland had put Germany under considerable pressure. The country had promised to deliver its Leopard 2 tanks.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) eventually approved the tank deliveries by Germany, claiming it was coordinated with other Western supporters of Ukraine. Initially it was about 14 Leopard 2 tanks, but in the meantime the new German Federal Minister of Defense Boris Pistorius (SPD) promised Ukraine the delivery of 178 Leopard 1 tanks during his visit to Kyiv.

As it now turns out, there can be no question of a “coordination” of a “tank alliance”. Germany is alone in supplying its heavy battle tanks. The Abrams tanks promised by the USA only come with a long time lag of months or years, like this Editorial Network Germany (RND) citing the Washington Post know how to tell.
The European partners are also backing down: Poland has remained silent, France has not yet promised any heavy tanks, Greece and Austria have completely canceled – neither country will support Ukraine with battle tanks in the future either.
Germany is suddenly exposed and the relationship with Russia is once again heavily burdened. Russian President Putin has already classified the delivery of German tanks as historical.
“It’s unbelievable, but a fact: We are being threatened with the German tank Leopard”said Russia’s President at a commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the Red Army’s victory in the Battle of Stalingrad.

The process once again casts a pale light on the trust of the citizens in the politics of this federal government, as requested by Chancellor Scholz. Scholz had said in the Bundestag that all steps of the tank deliveries had been coordinated with the partner countries. And even more important: Germany would not become a party to the war with the delivery. It is highly questionable whether this promise is still credible given that Germany is the only supplier of heavy battle tanks.
