Presidents of Ukraine and the Philippines Volodymyr Zelensky and Ferdinand Marcos Jr. held their first telephone conversations. During the conversation, they discussed cooperation between countries and the development of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. This was announced by Mr. Zelensky. It was reported that the conversation could not be agreed upon since June 2022.
“Had the first telephone conversation in the history of bilateral relations with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. He thanked for the support of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine. We discussed further deepening of cooperation, in particular on international platforms,” he wrote in his Telegram channel.
In January, Chargé d’Affaires of Ukraine in Malaysia, Denis Mykhailyuk, said that the Ukrainian government could not agree on a conversation with Ferdinand Marcos Jr. from June 2022. In his opinion, this could happen due to the fact that at that time a new government was being formed in the Philippines. Later, Mr. Mikhailyuk apologized for his words.
Ferdinand Marcos Jr took office as President of the Philippines on June 30. In September, he said the Philippines was negotiating with Russia to buy energy and other “key commodities.”
