Russia will be able to quickly and effectively deal with cholera if the infection begins to spread in the country. This was stated in an interview with URA.RU by the head of the laboratory of especially dangerous infections of the center of the Federal Research Center for Fundamental Translational Medicine, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor Alexander Chepurnov.
Earlier, the World Health Organization (WHO) assessed the risk of the spread of cholera in the world as very high. They noted that today there is a shortage of vaccines against this infection. According to them, cases have already been reported from 18 countries. In addition, WHO fixes a high mortality from cholera.
“Normal sanitary and epidemiological measures are very effective against cholera. I’m not talking about the fact that there are good vaccines. And there are several of them, which are quite effective. I got one myself at the time. Also antibiotics. Even if something comes, it will not be so difficult to suppress. I don’t expect big trouble. Nothing so total will be for sure, ”said Alexander Chepurnov.
“I do not expect anything so special, at least in relation to our country. It so happened that he was an eyewitness to the cholera epidemic, which was in 1970 in the south and touched the Crimea. Cities were closed, communication was interrupted. The matter was serious enough. But this is a bacterial infection, so antibiotics are effective against it and normal sanitary measures are quite effective,” the professor added.
