UNICEF estimates the number of children affected by aftershocks in Turkey and Syria

Powerful earthquakes in Turkey and Syria have affected more than 7 million children, thousands of them could die. This is stated in the report of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), reported on February 14 by Al Jazeera TV channel.

The total number of affected children remains unclear. There are 4.6 million children living in ten earthquake-hit provinces in Turkey. Over 2.5 million children have been affected in Syria, according to the report.

The organization expresses fears that “many thousands” of children have died. Of major concern are children’s access to clean water and sanitation, as well as access to health care.

“Many families have lost their homes and are now living in temporary shelters, often in the cold, with snow and rain exacerbating their suffering,” – the message says.

As reported IA REGNUM, according to the latest data from the Turkish authorities, almost 32 thousand people died in the country as a result of two powerful earthquakes. More than 81 thousand people were injured, while 8 thousand people were rescued alive from the rubble.
