Turkey earthquake death toll tops 9,000

The number of people who died as a result of two earthquakes that occurred in Turkey on the night of February 6 continues to grow. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the death toll had risen to 9,057 from 8,574 during the day.

“The death toll in Turkey at the moment is 9057, the death toll in Hatay (a region in the south of the country. – Kommersant) at the moment is 3356, the number of wounded throughout the country is 52,979, the number of destroyed buildings is 6444,” said Erdogan during his visit to earthquake-affected areas (quoted from Anadoluda Bugun).

Monday’s earthquake was the largest in Turkey since 1939, when 33,000 people died in the eastern province of Erzincan, AFP reported. In 1999, a magnitude 7.4 earthquake claimed the lives of over 17,000 people.
