Former US President Donald Trump offered his thoughts on the jury’s decision to find him guilty of paying porn actress Stormy Daniels $130,000. The accusations against him were described by Trump as political persecution.
“This is political persecution and election interference at the highest level in history. I believe this witch hunt will hit Joe Biden hard,” Trump said in a statement (quoted from AFP). He noted that he considers himself “completely innocent.”
His lawyer, Alina Khabba, is convinced that the former president “was the victim of a corrupt and distorted version of the American justice system.” She expects him to be acquitted, AP reports. Another lawyer for politician Joe Tacopina told CNN that Donald Trump could face trial early next week.
This is the first time in US history that a current or former president of a country will face criminal charges. Prosecutors believe Stormy Daniels was given the money to “buy silence” over her alleged ties to Mr Trump. Despite the investigation, the popularity of the ex-US President among Republicans, according to opinion polls, continues to grow, and many of them support him.
