The Pentagon will move the aircraft carrier USS George W. Bush, stationed in the Mediterranean Sea, closer to Turkey to help with the earthquake, Pentagon spokesman Patrick Ryder said. The United States has previously sent search and rescue teams, cargo planes and helicopters to the country.
“We are trying to do everything possible to respond to their requests and help them,” Mr. Ryder said at a briefing (quoted by the Pentagon newspaper Stars and Stripes).
USS George HW Bush is a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier. The flagship of the George Bush aircraft carrier strike group deployed in support of the US Sixth Fleet in the US Naval Operations Area in Europe and Africa.
Several powerful earthquakes hit Turkey on the night of February 6. The magnitude reached 7.8. More than 20,000 people died in Turkey, more than 3,000 died in Syria.
