UN: Earthquake death toll in Turkey and Syria to double
Ankara, 13 February 2023, 04:57 — REGNUM The death toll from a devastating earthquake in southeastern Turkey and northern Syria could exceed 50,000. This was stated in an interview with Sky News by the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs. Martin Griffiths.
Griffiths said it’s hard to estimate the potential loss of life right now. A significant part of the dead is still under the rubble. According to the official, when all the ruins are cleared, the death toll could double and reach about 56,000 people.
“It’s horrible. Nature strikes back in an extremely cruel way.”Griffiths said.
Recall that according to the latest data, the death toll in Turkey and Syria exceeded 30 thousand people.
