New trial of convicted oppositionist Tikhanovsky begins in Belarus

The court of the city of Zhodino in the Minsk region today, February 14, began considering a criminal case against Siarhei Tsikhanouski, who is accused of disobedience to the administration of the correctional facility. Now the oppositionist is serving an 18-year term in the case of preparing mass riots.

“The consideration of the case will take place in an offsite court session in prison No. 8 in the city of Zhodino,” the city court told TASS.

Tikhanovsky was arrested during the 2020 presidential campaign and was sentenced in December 2021. In August 2022, he was transferred to a “prison regime” (the most severe in existence) for three years. According to the investigation, from August to November last year, the oppositionist “repeatedly disobeyed the lawful demands of the administration of the institution,” which is why a case was opened under Part 2 of Art. 411 of the Criminal Code of Belarus (malicious disobedience to the administration of a correctional institution, committed by a person convicted of a grave or especially grave crime). The maximum penalty under this article is imprisonment for up to two years.
