Natural population decline in Russia in 2022 decreased by 42.5%

Mortality in Russia last year compared to 2021 decreased by 22.1 percent, and the natural population decline decreased by 42.5 percent, according to the website of Rosstat on Friday.

The department said that in 2022, 1,905,778 people died in Russia, while in 2021 this figure was 2,445,509 people. At the same time, 1,306,162 children were born last year, and 1,402,834 the year before last.

“The death rate in 2022 decreased by 22.1% compared to 2021, the birth rate decreased by 6.9%. The natural decline amounted to 599 thousand 616 people, which is 42.5% lower than the same indicator for 2021,” the publication says. The number of marriages in 2022 increased by 14.1 percent and reached 1.05 million, while in 2021 Russians got married only about 923 thousand times. At the same time, the number of divorces also increased by six percent (683,000 against 644,000).

Earlier it became known that the population of Russia in 2022 decreased by more than 555 thousand people. According to Rosstat, at the beginning of 2023 it amounted to 146 million 424 thousand 729 Russians, excluding those living in the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, as well as Zaporozhye and Kherson regions.
