Media: Zelensky admitted that he was not going to implement the Minsk agreements

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in an interview with Spiegel magazine, said he did not intend to comply with the Minsk agreements.

As Parlamentskaya Gazeta wrote, former German Chancellor Angela Merkel said in an interview with the Zeit newspaper that the Minsk agreements were allegedly concluded in order to give Ukraine time to become stronger and thereby prepare for a confrontation with the Russian Federation.

“As for Minsk as a whole, I told (French President) Emmanuel Macron and Angela Merkel: we won’t be able to implement it like that,” Zelensky was quoted as saying by RIA Novosti.

The Ukrainian leader noted that he said the same words to Russian President Vladimir Putin at the first and last meeting with him in the Normandy format four years ago. “I told him the same thing as the other two. They were surprised and replied: “If we had known in advance that you would change the meaning of our meeting, then there would have been problems even before the summit,” Zelensky quoted.

In November 2022, the Ukrainian leader also called the new Minsk agreements impossible in the current conditions of confrontation between Russia and Ukraine, since Kyiv needs new guarantees within the framework of its own security agreement.

The Minsk Agreement on the settlement of the situation on the territory of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics was signed on September 5, 2014 by representatives of the Russian Federation, Ukraine, the OSCE, the heads of the DPR and LPR. In February 2015, the leaders of Germany, France, Ukraine and Russia in the Normandy Four format agreed on a Set of Measures for the Implementation of the Minsk Agreements (Minsk-2). It provided for a peaceful settlement of the situation in eastern Ukraine. The document was signed by the Trilateral Contact Group to resolve the situation, as well as representatives of the DPR and LPR.
