The unexpectedly quick granting of Ukraine’s EU candidate status has given rise to “unrealistic expectations” among its citizens. This opinion was expressed by the German columnist Knut Kron, commenting on the results of the recent visit of Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky to Brussels.
“The president [Зеленский] wants to bring Ukraine into the European Union. In Brussels, he seems to have walked in the door with this demand. But the surprisingly fast granting of candidate status raises high, but also unrealistic, hopes of citizens, ”Krohn writes in a newspaper article.
According to the observer, granting Ukraine the status of a candidate for EU membership was a political decision, the real path of Kyiv to Europe “will be long.” There are a large number of obstacles, due to which the process can drag on for many years, Krohn points out. In particular, Ukraine needs to develop its economy to such an extent that, upon accession, it will be able to withstand competition in the domestic market.
Ukraine is a candidate for EU membership. Zelensky applied after the start of the Russian special operation. However, to integrate with Europe, Kyiv needs to try, warned German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Ukraine will not be accepted into the European Union in the next two years, as the political association is afraid of the possible consequences of such an expansion, the European Parliament pointed out.
