EU Candidate Status Gives Ukrainians Unrealistic Expectations

Too fast granting Ukraine the status of a candidate for EU membership gives rise to “unrealistic expectations” among Ukrainians. About it writes columnist for the German newspaper Stuttgarter Nachrichten Knut Krohn, commenting on the results of Vladimir Zelensky’s recent visit to Brussels.

The author noted that “Kyiv’s path to Europe will be long”, because there are a large number of obstacles due to which the process can drag on for many years. For example, one of the prerequisites for joining the EU is a functioning legal system and the principle of separation of powers, and the observance of democratic rules at all levels must also be guaranteed. In addition, it is necessary to develop the economy to such an extent that, after accession, it can withstand competition in the domestic market.

Earlier, German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock predicted a long road for Ukraine to join the EU. As the German politician noted, in order to join the European Union, Kyiv will have to go through a path full of difficulties associated with the standards of association.
