Dzhemil Gafarov, convicted in the case of Hizb ut-Tahrir, died in the pre-trial detention center of Novocherkassk

Today, February 10, in the Rostov region, 60-year-old Dzhemil Gafarov, convicted under an article for terrorism, died in the case of the Crimean cell of Hizb ut-Tahrir al-Islami (a terrorist organization banned in Russia). The man died in a pre-trial detention center in the city of Novocherkassk, his lawyer Edem Semedlyaev told Kommersant.

According to the defender, there is no information yet about what caused the death of the prisoner.

“He had bad kidneys and heart. He is a group II disabled person. About ten days ago, we went to the hospital of the Zheleznodorozhny district of Rostov-on-Don to conduct an examination. Relatives donated money for this purpose. But the head of the medical unit of pre-trial detention center No. 5 of Rostov, where Jemil Gafarov was being held at that moment, refused to issue a permit for the examination, ”said Edem Semedlyaev.

The defender also explained that the autopsy should be done within two days. The conclusion of the examination will be received later. The lawyer and relatives will go to the Rostov region on Monday to organize the man’s funeral.

Dzhemil Gafarov and four other Crimeans were sentenced by the Southern District Military Court to 13 years in prison in January this year. According to the case file, in 2016 they joined Hizb ut-Tahrir al-Islami and participated in agitation and propaganda activities. They were detained in 2019 as part of a criminal case under Part 2 of Art. 205.5 (participation in the activities of a terrorist organization) and Part 1 of Art. 30, art. 278 (preparation for a violent seizure of power) of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.
