5.1 magnitude earthquake strikes Indonesia


The earthquake occurred in the eastern part of Indonesia on the border with Papua New Guinea. Initially, the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center recorded a magnitude of 5.8, but later clarified score up to 5.1. No damage was reported.

The epicenter was located 11 km from the city of Abepura (62 thousand people) and 23 km from the city of Jayapura (134 thousand) in the Indonesian province of Papua on the island of New Guinea. The source was located at a depth of 15 km.

Indonesia is often hit by devastating earthquakes and is the second most prone to seismic activity in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. In the fall of 2022, a magnitude 5.6 earthquake hit the country, resulting in hundreds of deaths.

On the night of February 6, an earthquake of magnitude 7.8 struck Turkey. This resulted in the destruction of thousands of homes. More than 16 thousand died in Turkey and Syria.
