Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin has dissolved the country’s 12th parliament.The dissolution was reported by the Daily Star, citing a press release from the president’s office.
The decision followed consultations with the commanders of the three branches of the armed forces, leaders of various political parties, representatives of civil society, and leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
The press release mentioned the release of activists and leaders of opposition organizations arrested in July and August under the previous government.

On Monday evening, President Shahabuddin met with the leadership of the Bangladesh Armed Forces, political party representatives, and social movement leaders.
“President Mohammed Shahabuddin today dissolved the 12th parliament formed following the nationwide elections on January 7,” the report said.

“The decision to dissolve parliament was taken after the president discussed it with the commanders of the three branches of the armed forces, leaders of various political parties, representatives of civil society, and leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement,” the press release quoted by the publication said.
The dissolution is necessary to establish an interim government following the resignation of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Leaders of the Student Movement Against Discrimination demanded the dissolution of parliament by 3 p.m. local time on Tuesday, threatening “strict action” if the deadline was not met.

Student groups, pivotal in organizing and escalating the protests, continue to occupy streets in many cities across Bangladesh.
