Director Andrey Zvyagintsev left the post of the Russian “Oscar Committee”. He told Meduza about this (recognized as a foreign agent). The decision was made due to the refusal of the Presidium of the Russian Film Academy to nominate the film for the Oscar.
Earlier today, on September 27, director Pavel Chukhrai, chairman of the Oscar Committee, announced his resignation. He called the film academy’s decision “illegal” because it was made “unilaterally”. Also “Oscar Committee” left directed by Nikolay Dostal. According to TASSother directors also left the committee, but their names were not announced.
On September 26, the Presidium of the Russian Film Academy announced that in 2022 it would not nominate a domestic film for the Oscars. The reasons for the decision are unknown. Presidium member Alexei Uchitel and director Andrei Konchalovsky spoke about the need to submit a Russian film to the awards. The chairman of the Union of Cinematographers, Nikita Mikhalkov, noted that “this is pointless,” because in the United States, where the event takes place, “they deny the existence of Russia.”
