Vladimir Rogov, a member of the main council of the pro-Russian military-civilian administration of Zaporozhye, announced the second shelling of the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) and the territory near the nuclear facility in a day. He specified that no one was injured during the shelling and blamed the Armed Forces of Ukraine for the shelling. The fact of the shelling was confirmed by the Ukrainian Energoatom, specifying that the situation is still under control. However, the Ukrainian side accuses Russian servicemen of shelling.
“Five “arrivals” were recorded in the area of the commandant’s office of the station – next to the welding site and the storage of radiation sources. Another five “arrivals” took place in the area of the fire station, located near the ZNPP,” Mr. Rogov said in his Telegram channel. He noted that three “arrivals” were recorded near the storage of radioactive isotopes. The radiation background is normal, but a fire has started on the field near the nuclear power plant, which is now being extinguished.
The strikes, according to Vladimir Rogov, are carried out using MLRS and heavy artillery from the right bank of the Dnieper, from the territory of the Dnipropetrovsk region, from the settlements of Nikopol, Marganets and Tomakovka, which are under the control of Ukrainian troops. According to the pro-Russian authorities, the strikes did not lead to fires at the power units, while information on the consequences of the shelling is being specified.
Earlier today, on August 11, Vladimir Rogov said that Russian air defense systems repelled the attacks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. They were carried out by strike drones and heavy artillery.
“As a result of shelling at the station, it was not possible to carry out a “shift change” on time. For the safety of nuclear scientists, the buses with the personnel of the next shift were turned back to Energodar. Until the situation finally normalizes, the workers of the previous shift will continue to work,” Energoatom said in the Telegram channel.
Russian troops have controlled the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant since March. Ukrainian specialists from Energoatom continue to work at the plant. The territory of the nuclear power plant began to be shelled regularly in August. So, strikes were made on it on August 5, 6 and 7. Russia said that the shelling was carried out by the Ukrainian military. Kyiv denies any involvement and accuses the Russian armed forces of shelling the nuclear power plant where the Russian military is stationed.
UN Secretary General António Guterres urged Russia and Ukraine not to strike at the station. He stated the need for a “secure demilitarization perimeter”. At the moment, a trip of IAEA experts to the station to ensure security on the territory is being discussed. Russia stated that the trip was agreed on June 3, but it was thwarted by the UN secretariat. Representatives of the organization stated that they supported the organization of the visit of experts.
