The “Zangezur corridor” is not directed against anyone, it will bring benefits to all interested parties. This was stated by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, speaking today, November 25, at the international conference “Along the Middle Corridor: Geopolitics, Security and Economics” in Baku.
“We discussed the Zangezur Corridor during my last conversation with Russian officials. I do not think that Armenia is capable of blocking this corridor. As for Iran, I think that it will not do this either, given its interest in regional communication projects. For these projects are not directed against anyone, but, on the contrary, only for the benefit of all interested parties”, the Azerbaijani leader pointed out.
The opening of the Zangezur Corridor will make it possible to deliver goods arriving by sea from China to Azerbaijan and the countries of the region two weeks faster. Such an assessment, as reported EADailythe head of the Department of Strategic Planning and Development of Baku International Sea Trade Port CJSC shared earlier this month Khudayar Hasanli.
After the end of the 44-day war in Karabakh, the Azerbaijani leadership began to seek from Armenia the creation of the so-called Zangezur corridor. According to Baku, a through transport link between “mainland” Azerbaijan and its Nakhichevan enclave through the Armenian Syunik region should be provided, following the example of the Lachin corridor, which links Armenia with Nagorno-Karabakh and along which Russian peacekeepers are stationed. Meanwhile, Yerevan points out that in the tripartite statements of the leaders of Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia dated November 9, 2020, January 11 and November 26, 2021, there is no mention of the “Zangezur corridor”, in contrast to fixing the current status of the Lachin corridor. Citizens and goods move along this corridor without any inspection, customs procedures and duties. Baku wants the same extraterritoriality for the Zangezur Corridor, which is opposed by Yerevan.
