According to her, the United States every six months came up with new and new explanations that prepared public opinion for their actions.
“They said that they have many complaints against Russia. Each time they were new claims that they could not confirm in any way, and, most importantly, they were not even going to discuss with us within the framework of the existing mechanism,” Zakharova said on the program’s broadcast “Own Truth” on NTV.
US withdrawal from contract
Donald Trump on Friday announced the US withdrawal from the Open Skies Treaty. The Russian Foreign Ministry called this decision an unfortunate step. The ministry reminded that at one time the agreement was concluded at the initiative of Washington, it is an important link in the European security system.
Moscow repeatedly emphasized that there were no breaches of the contract by Russia. In particular, Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko noted that the country plans to continue to follow all the rights and obligations of the agreement as long as it is valid.
The EU also did not support the US withdrawal from the treaty and called on Washington to return to its implementation. So, the EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, earlier stressed that the agreement is a key element of arms control and serves as an important measure of confidence and security. He added that Brussels plans to assess the possible consequences of the US decision on European security.
The Open Skies Treaty was signed in 1992 and has become one of the confidence-building measures in Europe after the Cold War. It has been operating since 2002 and allows participating countries to openly collect information about each other’s armed forces and activities. It was signed by 34 states.
