WSJ: Xi plans to meet Putin at SCO summit in September

Chinese President Xi Jinping plans to travel to Central Asia to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin and other leaders at a regional summit next month. The newspaper reports The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) citing sources. This is the summit of the leaders of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member countries, which will pass September 15–16 in Samarkand.

Xi’s tentative inclusion of the trip comes after US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan sparked fears in Beijing of an accidental military clash, the WSJ said. Reuters).

Earlier today, August 19, Reuters reportedthat the leaders of China and Russia will attend the G20 summit in Bali this November.

The trip to Bali will be of great importance, the agency said, given that this will be Xi Jinping’s first visit outside of China since his January 2020 visit to Myanmar. Since then, the Chinese president made his only trip outside of mainland China on June 30, visiting Hong Kong to mark the 25th anniversary of the transfer of territory from British control.
