WSJ: US threatens Turkey with sanctions for supporting Russia and Hamas

Turkish companies and entrepreneurs could be subject to US sanctions for providing Russia with goods and services that are prohibited by Western export controls. The intention to impose sanctions was announced by US Treasury Undersecretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Brian Nelson, noting that Turkey is also a financial haven for Hamas.

The report clarifies that despite US sanctions aimed at Hamas over the past ten years, Turkey has allowed investment companies, holding companies, real estate brokers and many other businesses to operate outside of Istanbul.

The newspaper also noted that trade relations between Turkey and Russia have increased significantly in 2023. This happened despite export controls designed to block the flow of exports of electronic and other goods.

Bloomberg reported that Brian Nelson, during his visit to Turkey, will ask the country’s leadership to comply with unilateral US sanctions against a number of Russian organizations and the financial activities of Hamas. In October 2023, the list of persons under sanctions in the country expanded.
