Australia and New Zealand are the best places to survive a nuclear war

If humanity crosses the fatal boundary and starts a nuclear war, then the inhabitants of island states in the Southern Hemisphere, for example, Australia and New Zealand, are most likely to survive it. To such conclusion came scientists from the American scientific journal Risk Analysis, transmits Pravda.Ru.

The study found Australia, New Zealand, Iceland, the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu to be the most able to produce enough food for their population after a sudden disaster with a decrease in sunlight. The authors of the study write that there are likely to be groups of survivors all over the planet even under the most difficult scenario. Moreover, the inhabitants of the most economically and politically stable countries also have the best chances of avoiding a pre-industrial collapse.

In total, the researchers compared 38 island nations across 13 predictors of post-apocalyptic success, including food production, energy availability, and the impact of a natural disaster on the climate. Australia and New Zealand are powerful suppliers of agricultural products to the world market, they are far from other countries and will suffer less from radioactive fallout in the Northern Hemisphere.
