Kommersant: Russia is testing a system for tracking wild animals using AI
In Russia, they are testing a system for recognizing wild animals using artificial intelligence, said “Kommersant”. Perhaps the system will help to more humanely prevent conflict situations with animals. Testing is carried out by the Russian developer of face recognition systems NtechLab.
It is assumed that the system will distinguish a wild animal approaching the settlement and send a notification to the workers of the reserve. They will be able to drive the animal to a safe area without harming it.
They want to test the system in the Pionersky village near Yugorsk in April. The start of commercial operation is scheduled for 2024. So far, NtechLab has only integrated a video with a bear into the system, but over time it will be trained to distinguish other wild animals.
The company is engaged in testing in cooperation with the Yugansk nature reserve, the Malaya Sosva nature reserve and the Quantorium children’s technopark in Nefteyugansk. Market demands for animal recognition systems are growing – last year, wild animals were recorded in settlements even in the Leningrad Region. The system may also be relevant for the Trans-Baikal and Kamchatka Territories, the republics of Khakassia and Komi.
