North Ossetia was one of the strategic goals of Nazi Germany in the North Caucasus. A direct road to the oil reserves of Azerbaijan and Checheno-Ingushetia opened from the territory of the republic. The path to Georgia and the Caspian also lay through the capital of North Ossetia – Ordzhonikidze (Vladikavkaz). The defense of the city became one of the glorious pages of the Soviet army in the battle for the Caucasus.
