Volodin considers the death penalty acceptable in wartime

According to the Chairman of the State Duma, Vyacheslav Volodin, the death penalty is a form of punishment that “it would be right to keep” in the legislation of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) recognized by Russia. He stated that “fascists” representing the “neo-Nazi regime in Kyiv” deserve capital punishment.

“Whoever gives orders to shoot at civilians and who executes them must understand that they are committing a crime, and the responsibility for it will be the most severe. The death penalty is the punishment that these fascists deserve,” said Vyacheslav Volodin in his Telegram channel. According to him, the Ukrainian authorities commit “crimes against humanity” every day.

Viacheslav Volodin clarified that, despite the process of harmonization of the legislation of Russia and the DPR, the institution of the death penalty in Donbass should be preserved due to its particular relevance in “wartime conditions”.

At the end of February, Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev, commenting on the suspension of Russia’s membership in the Council of Europe and PACE, noted that now the Russian leadership can freely restore “a number of important institutions” – including the death penalty for “the most dangerous criminals.”
