A large-scale clash erupted between Hindutva extremists and Muslims in Nagpur, Maharashtra, leading to widespread violence – AP report.

Stones thrown and shops and vehicles set on fire. The unrest which spread to other cities in Maharashtra has resulted in at least six civilians and three police officers injured. In response to escalating violence curfew has been imposed to restore order.

At least 50 individuals arrested for their involvement in violence and law enforcement has been actively working to control the situation.
The conflict initially sparked on Monday evening, following demands from Hindutva groups to remove the tomb of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb.
World Hindu Council (VHP) and Bajrang Dal led protests in Nagpur marking the tomb as a symbol of tyranny.

Tensions intensified when rumors circulated about the burning of a Quran which provoked anger among the Muslim community. Protests quickly escalated into violent clashes, with vehicles and shops attacked and set on fire. The violence extended to police forces and seven fire service vehicles destroyed while trying to extinguish the flames.
Authorities imposed the curfew late Monday night which remains in effect in Nagpur and surrounding areas. By Tuesday morning situation had somewhat stabilized, but tensions continue to simmer in the region.

The root of this conflict appears to stem from long-standing demands by some Hindutva groups to remove Aurangzeb’s tomb dating back to the Mughal Empire.

However, both the ruling BJP and opposition Congress parties have opposed the removal of the tomb, emphasizing the potential for distorting history.
With both political parties questioning the necessity of stirring up tension over an issue more than 300 years old.
Situation remains tense with authorities closely monitoring the ongoing unrest.
