Vicegerent of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra: the apocalypse begins with Ukraine

The abbot of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, Metropolitan of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) Pavel said that the monks, who are ordered to leave the monastery before March 29, will defend their rights and shrines to the last. He called the Ukrainian authorities “grandchildren of the revolution” and expressed the opinion that “the apocalypse begins with Ukraine.”

“On March 29, we, monks, more than 200 people, must leave the walls of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, our home. The grandchildren of the revolution, the grandchildren of the leaders of the persecutors of the Church of Christ, today are hiding behind the good. Probably, the apocalypse begins with Ukraine”, — quotes the words of Metropolitan Pavel “Strana.ua”.

Metropolitan Pavel emphasized that, despite the order, the monks intend to defend their rights and shrines to the last. “There are people who put on priestly clothes and dream of desecrating everything they can. They desecrated the Assumption and Refectory Cathedrals. If they vilify the church, they vilify Christ,” he added.

On December 2, 2022, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky announced that the country would ban the activities of religious organizations affiliated with Russia. Sanctions also began to be imposed on representatives of the UOC, and searches were carried out at church facilities. The Ukrainian authorities suspect representatives of the UOC of having links with Russia. On March 10, the national reserve “Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra” demanded that the monks of the UOC leave the territory of the Lavra until March 29. The decision was explained by violations of the terms of the agreement on gratuitous use.
