US Imposes 50% Tariff on India: Modi Calls for Domestic Production Amid High-Level Talks

US has enforced additional 50% tariff on Indian goods, prompting Prime Minister Narendra Modi to rally citizens toward producing and using local products.

Tensions over tariffs led to recent meeting between top officials from both nations, focusing on strategic priorities, trade, investment, and regional security.

To counter tariff effects, India ramps up emphasis on homegrown items. During Independence Day address from Red Fort, Modi urged people to boost local manufacturing and consumption. He encouraged small shops and businesses to display Swadeshi boards. Throughout this week, Modi repeated these calls in various events.

BJP government announced major tax relief for ordinary citizens and small enterprises. Plans include 12 billion dollars in income tax cuts for reform and simplification. Economists believe these steps will strengthen consumer economy and drive GDP growth.

Amid ongoing friction, Tuesday’s discussions covered defense, industrial ties, science, technology, regional involvement, and intelligence exchange.

Both sides reaffirmed commitments to strategic goals, trade, investment, civil nuclear power, critical minerals, counter-terrorism, and anti-drug efforts. Talks also advanced framework for India-US Major Defense Partnership over next decade.
