UMMC basketball player arrested for drug smuggling
The White House agreed to accept the conditions put forward by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on the exchange of the detained American ex-UMMC basketball player Brittney Griner. According to Lavrov, Russia is ready to discuss the process only within the framework of a “special channel agreed upon by the presidents” of Russia and the United States. This was stated by White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.
“We talk about it all the time: it remains – does not remain unknown, but we must keep the negotiations secret. And so we will continue to urge Russia to take seriously the significant proposal that we put forward to them, ”said the White House press secretary.
The United States urged to accept an offer to exchange Greiner, who was detained for drug smuggling and Paul Whelan convicted of espionage, for Russian businessman Viktor Bout (sentenced in the United States to 25 years in prison for arms trafficking – ed.). US President Joe Biden said that the US authorities are actively working to release the ex-UGMK basketball player.
Earlier, URA.RU reported that the court found Brittney Griner guilty of drug smuggling and sentenced her to nine years in prison. At the hearing, the American athlete pleaded guilty.
