Unemployment in Georgia decreased by 4% compared to 2021

The unemployment rate in Georgia in the second quarter of 2022 amounted to 18.1%, which is 4% less than in the same period in 2021, the Georgian National Statistics Service said in a statement.

“In the first quarter of 2022, the unemployment rate in Georgia was 19.4%, in the fourth quarter of 2021 – 19%, in the third quarter – 19.5%,” — said in the study.

During the reporting period, the number of unemployed decreased by 63 thousand people or 18.3% compared to the same period in 2021 and amounted to 281.6 thousand people.

“Unemployment in rural areas is much lower than in urban areas. In the second quarter of 2022, compared to the same period in 2021, unemployment in both urban and rural settlements decreased by 3.9%, amounting to 20.2 and 15.1%, respectively. The unemployment rate is traditionally higher among men than among women. In the second quarter of 2022, compared to the same period in 2021, this figure decreased by four percentage points for men to 20.5%, and for women by 3.8% to 15.0%,” the report says.

The working-age economically active population in Georgia in the second quarter of 2022 was 51.5% – 0.1% higher compared to the same period in 2021.

An economically active person is a person 15 years of age or older who works or offers his or her work. At the same time, he will be considered unemployed if, during the seven days before the survey, he did not work for the purpose of earning money, he has been looking for a job for the last four weeks and is ready to start work in the next two weeks.

“The level of activity, compared to the same period last year, decreased in urban settlements by 1.6 percentage points, while in rural settlements it increased by 2.3 percentage points. The employment rate across the country increased by 2.1 percentage points and amounted to 42.2%”, – stated in the materials of “Gruzstat”.

The share of employed workers in the total number of employed in the second quarter of this year amounted to 68.4%, which is 0.1% less than in the same period in 2021.

The number of employed workers in Georgia in the second quarter increased by 36.2 thousand people or 4.4% compared to the same period last year and amounted to 867.9 thousand people. The number of self-employed increased by 19.4 thousand (5.1) and amounted to 401.2 thousand. The level of activity in men is higher than in women. In the second quarter, this figure was 40.8% for women and 64.2% for men. At the same time, the level of activity of women increased by 0.1%, and men – by 0.5%.
