UN peacekeepers will not be stationed at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant

The UN is not considering the option of deploying a peacekeeping contingent of the organization on the territory of the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), since the UN believes that Ukraine and Russia are independently capable of creating a security perimeter around the plant. This was stated by the press secretary of the UN Secretary General António Guterres Stefan Dujarric.

“I don’t think there are any discussions about the deployment of UN peacekeepers. I think that the parties are quite capable of following the vision that the UN Secretary General outlined in his statement,” Mr. Dujarric said during a UN press conference broadcast on YouTube channel organizations.

Earlier today, Mr. Guterres called on Russia and Ukraine to stop carrying out strikes on the territory of the Zaporizhzhya NPP and to withdraw the military from the territory of the plant. He also called on the parties to conclude an agreement on a “secure demilitarization perimeter”. To date, three shellings of the territories adjacent to the ZNPP have been recorded, since March 2022 the station has been under the control of the Russian military.
