Ukraine has developed a “dictionary of the occupation of Crimea and Donbass”

The Office of the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) of Ukraine has published a glossary (.pdf) for the authorities, diplomats and the media, which is recommended to be used “in connection with the temporary occupation by the Russian Federation of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, Sevastopol and certain areas of Donetsk and Luhansk regions.” In it, the NSDC proposes to abandon the term “Great Patriotic War” and call the events of 2014 a “revolution of dignity” or “Euromaidan.”

“The implementation by the Russian Federation of aggressive foreign policy goals directed against Ukraine has a systemic and complex nature, in particular in the information sphere,” reads the preface to the document.

What concepts are proposed to be used in the glossary:

  • “Kiev power (junta)” – “Ukrainian state, Ukraine”, “the government of Ukraine, official representatives of Ukraine”;
  • “Coup d’etat (mutiny, color revolution) of 2014 in Ukraine” – “revolution of dignity”, “euromaidan”;
  • “Reunification of Crimea and Sevastopol with Russia”, “annexation of Crimea”, “return of Crimea” – “temporary occupation (by Russia) of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol (Crimean peninsula)”, “Russian invasion of Crimea, Russia’s seizure of Crimea”;
  • “Civil war in Ukraine”, “internal conflict in Ukraine”, “Ukrainian crisis” – “armed aggression of Russia against Ukraine”, “act of Russian (territorial) aggression in violation of the UN Charter”, “Russian-Ukrainian war”, “Russian war against Ukraine ”,“ military invasion / intervention of the Russian Federation ”;
  • “Ukraine’s aggression against the citizens of Donbass -” from 04/14/2014 to 04/30/2018 – ATE (anti-terrorist operation), 04/30/2018 – JFO (joint forces operation) “,” repelling Russian aggression against Ukraine “;
  • “The Great Patriotic War” – “World War II”, “Soviet-German War”.

It is also proposed to abandon the concepts of “Russian world”, “Little Russia” and “Novorossiya”. The Russian world is proposed to be written in quotation marks, instead of Little Russia to use “Ukraine”, instead of the term Novorossiya – to use the names of specific regions. It is recommended to call the Republic of Abkhazia “Georgian territory occupied by Russia”, South Ossetia –

“Russian-occupied territories in the Tskhinvali region of Georgia.”
