United States might return to World Health Organization (WHO), but Trump administration seeks certain reforms within the organization.

According to a Reuters report citing U.S. government officials, U.S. aims to restore WHO’s effectiveness through these changes. One key proposal is appointing an American citizen as the head of WHO. If these reforms accepted, U.S. could remain part of the organization.

President Donald Trump, shortly after taking office, issued an executive order to withdraw U.S. from WHO. This process could be finalized by next year.
However, media reports suggest U.S. might rejoin, provided certain conditions met. Trump administration has prepared several reform plans, including making leadership changes to address what it sees as a lack of U.S. influence and inefficiencies in the organization.
Reuters also notes that WHO’s current Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, will complete his term in 2027. Under current rules, any member state can propose a candidate for the Director-General position, but securing the role requires support from two-thirds of member states.
