Turkey’s Supreme Electoral Council (YSK) announced on Thursday the final results of the second round of the presidential elections in Turkey, held on May 28.
In the second round, and, consequently, in the presidential elections themselves, the current president of Turkey won Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
YSK Chairman Ahmet Yener said at a press conference in Ankara on Thursday that Erdogan had won almost 28 million votes (52.18%).
opposition candidate Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu was not elected with 25.5 million votes, giving him 47.82%.
Yener also reported that the turnout in the second round was 85.72%.
The second round of the presidential elections became necessary because in the first round on May 14, which was held in parallel with the parliamentary elections, none of the candidates managed to gain an absolute majority of votes.
Erdogan has been Turkey’s head of state since 2014 and is now running for his third term. He previously served as prime minister from 2003 to 2014.
Kılıçdaroğlu has been the chairman of the largest opposition Kemalist Republican People’s Party (CHP) since 2010.
The mandate of the President of the Republic of Turkey is valid for a period of five years.
