Washington, 4 October. Former US President Donald Trump sued CNN. The GOP leader accused the journalists of running a “smear campaign” and is seeking $475 million in damages.

In his lawsuit, Trump alleges that CNN used its considerable influence as a leading news organization to harm him politically. According to the ex-president, CNN has long criticized him, but in recent months has stepped up its attacks for fear that he will run for president again in 2024.

“As part of its concerted effort to shift the political balance, CNN attempted to label the plaintiff falsely and defamatoryly as ‘racist’, ‘Russian lackey’, ‘rebel’ and ultimately ‘Hitler’,” the lawsuit says.

The lawsuit lists several instances where CNN compared Trump to Hitler in its stories, including a January 2022 special by host Fareed Zakaria that included footage of the German dictator.

The Republican leader said he would file lawsuits against other major media companies “in the coming weeks and months.” He also said that he could take action against a congressional committee investigating the January 6, 2021, assault on the Capitol.

Representatives for CNN declined to comment on the lawsuit.

Trump’s lawsuit against the TV channel appeared against the backdrop of numerous lawsuits that the US Department of Justice initiated against the 45th president and his closest associates. The main purpose of the accusations, according to experts, is to prevent his participation in the 2024 presidential election.
