U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are expected to discuss a proposed ceasefire later this week, according to a U.S. special envoy. The meeting aims to address ongoing violence in Ukraine.

European allies of Kyiv have urged Moscow to agree to a 30-day unconditional ceasefire. However, Russia has yet to commit to U.S.-mediated peace proposal.

Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Mark Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov recently held a phone conversation regarding the matter. Russia stated that both sides discussed specific points based on last month’s summit in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
U.S. special envoy Whitcoff described his recent meeting in Moscow as positive, lasting three to four hours. He confirmed that Putin has supported 30-day ceasefire plan but expressed concerns about its implementation.
In addition, Russia has provided Ukrainian troops surrounded in Kursk region with a deadline to surrender. Putin assured that surrendered soldiers would be treated safely and with respect.

However, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha stated that their military operations in Kursk region will continue. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Putin of dishonesty, claiming Russian leader is not genuinely interested in ending the war. Zelensky and his European allies have urged Putin to agree to the ceasefire without conditions.
