The United States “bite its tongue” on the topic of bin Salman’s involvement in the death of Khashoggi

The White House has declined to directly answer the question of whether US President Joe Biden believes that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is behind the murder of Saudi dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi. This was reported by the CNN Arabic news portal on June 14.

Notably, a US intelligence report claimed that bin Salman was directly responsible for Khashoggi’s death, authorizing his assassination in 2018. This topic has become relevant again against the backdrop of reports about the preparation of the first visit Joe Biden to Saudi Arabia, which would be a de facto violation of his campaign promise to isolate the kingdom by making him a “rogue” for his role as a prince in Khashoggi’s murder. In preparation for this visit, the White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre refused to give a direct answer to the question of whether Biden considers bin Salman a killer, despite his past statements.

The planned trip of the American leader to Saudi Arabia has already drawn sharp criticism from human rights activists and some members of the Democratic Party, as Biden said during the campaign that the kingdom “must pay the price” for the death of Khashoggi.
