Deputy Speaker of the State Duma Zhukov did not rule out holding the Olympics without Russian athletes
Holding the Olympic Games without the participation of Russian athletes is quite likely, given the international sanctions against Russia. About this TASS informed Honorary President of the Russian Olympic Committee, Vice Speaker of the State Duma Alexander Zhukov.
“It is extremely sad, but it is quite possible to imagine. We remember the Olympics in the 80s of the last century, when our athletes did not participate in them, ”he said.
After the start of Russia’s special operation in Ukraine to protect the civilian population of Donbass from punishers, the International Olympic Committee recommended that international sports federations not invite Russian and Belarusian athletes to competitions under their auspices.
In addition, Russia was deprived of the right to host international sports tournaments, for example, the final match of the Champions League 2021/22, the Ice Hockey World Championship in 2023 and the World Men’s Volleyball Championship 2022.
Earlier, the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne rejected the appeal of the Russian Football Union and Russian clubs for suspension from participation in the 2022 World Cup and European competitions.
The next Summer Olympic Games will be held in Paris in 2024.
