The situation in Ukraine makes us think about the ban on nuclear weapons – Kazakh Foreign Minister

The situation that has developed on the territory of Ukraine makes us think about the need to ban nuclear weapons. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan, Mukhtar Tleuberdi, wrote about this in his article published in the Kazakh newspaper Liter, TASS reports today, June 19.

“As the Secretary General of the United Nations António GuterresToday, with some 13,400 nuclear warheads scattered around the world, the possibility of using nuclear weapons is more real than in the darkest days of the Cold War. The current military conflict on the territory of Ukraine, talk about the return of nuclear weapons and mutual threats to use nuclear weapons make us, more than ever before, think about the collective vulnerability of humanity and the urgent need to ban and eliminate these deadly weapons,” Tleuberdi said.

The Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan recalled that on June 21-23, 2022, the first meeting of the states-participants of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) will be held in Vienna, which, according to him, will become a historic event.

“We call on all states, including nuclear powers, to develop a phased plan for the complete elimination of nuclear weapons by 2045, the centenary of the UN. Proposals and agreements to achieve this goal could be reflected in the final documents of both the first conference of the TPNW and the review conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons,” wrote Tleuberdi.

He noted that Kazakhstan is aware that many political and technical obstacles stand in the way of achieving “this noble but ambitious goal”.

“We consider it necessary to start practical work in this direction,” the head of the Kazakh Foreign Ministry emphasized.
