Secretary General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Zhang Ming said that the association will contribute to the formation of more equitable international cooperation. This was announced today, March 28, TASS reports.
“It is supposed to focus on key issues that are directly related to ensuring human well-being, development and security. The Organization is guided by the common goals of establishing more equitable and effective international cooperation”, he said in an interview with the agency on the sidelines of the Boao Asian Forum in Hainan.
According to the Secretary General, in the third decade of the development of the SCO, the task of increasing the effectiveness of efforts to maintain regional stability in the context of the global transformation process gaining momentum is of particular relevance. He stressed that the organization will continue to play a constructive role in the international arena, “vigorously promoting the ‘Shanghai spirit’ and firmly supporting multilateral diplomacy.”
“The SCO is a platform for multilateral cooperation. Guided by the “Shanghai Spirit”, the Member States adhere to the principles of non-alignment, non-confrontation and non-direction against third countries”, Zhang Ming continued.
As the Secretary General noted, the SCO countries insist on a peaceful settlement of regional conflicts and interstate disputes by political means at the UN platform. He added that the member countries of the organization have repeatedly stated in the declarations of the meetings of the Council of Heads of State and in other documents about the need to promote the construction of a new type of international relations.
“The SCO will contribute to building international relations based on mutual respect, honesty and justice, mutually beneficial cooperation, as well as promoting the concept of building a community of common destiny,” Zhang Ming explained.
He specified that the organization has developed a good potential for expanding and deepening cooperation in the association’s area of responsibility.
“The SCO has accumulated significant economic and investment potential, which contributes to the improvement of trade and economic cooperation in the area of responsibility of the organization,” he said.
The Secretary General pointed out that against the backdrop of increasing turbulence in the international arena and taking into account many uncertainties at the current stage of world development, regional organizations are coming to the fore.
“In this regard, the role of the SCO as an effective multilateral mechanism in the development of economic ties between the states of the region will constantly increase,” – he said.
According to him, the organization is working on various projects in the field of finance, transport, energy and industry, agriculture, and electronic commerce.
“Consistent formation of a legal basis for the consistent deepening of economic partnership in the SCO is underway,” Zhang Ming concluded.
