Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleg Nikolenko commented on Indonesia’s peace plan, which was presented by Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto the day before. Mr. Nikolenko ruled out a ceasefire without the withdrawal of Russian troops from the territory of Ukraine within internationally recognized borders.
“Russia must get out of Ukrainian territories, and Ukraine must restore its territorial integrity within internationally recognized borders. There can be no alternative scenarios,” wrote Oleg Nikolenko on Facebook (the social network belongs to Meta, which is recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation).
Mr. Nikolenko added that a cease-fire, a 15-kilometer disengagement of forces and the creation of a demilitarized zone “won’t work either.” In his opinion, a ceasefire without the withdrawal of Russian troops “will allow Russia to gain time, regroup, gain a foothold in the occupied territories and accumulate strength for a new wave of aggression.”
On the eve of Prabowo, Subianto proposed a peaceful plan to resolve the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The plan calls for a ceasefire on both sides; withdrawal of troops 15 km from current positions to create a demilitarized zone; deployment of international peacekeeping forces in the demilitarized zone; organization by the UN of a referendum in the “disputed territories, in order to objectively confirm the will of the majority of the inhabitants.” Mr. Subianto did not explain what he meant by “disputed territories”.
