The state prosecution stated that it considers the guilt of American basketball player Brittney Griner in the hash oil smuggling case fully proven. The prosecutor’s office asked the court to appoint the athlete nine and a half years in a penal colony. The lawyer asked that her client be acquitted or that she be punished taking into account her role in Russian sports.
“I ask that Greiner Brittney Yvette be found guilty under Part 1 of Art. 228 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (illegal acquisition, storage, transportation of drugs without the purpose of sale) and part 2 of Art. 229.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (smuggling of narcotic drugs in a significant amount) and sentence her to nine years and six months in prison with serving a sentence in a penal colony with a fine of 1 million rubles, ”said the state prosecutor (quoted from TASS) in the Khimki City Court, where today, August 4, the parties debated.
The prosecutor also asked to set off the time spent by the athlete in the pre-trial detention center as part of the sentence. She recalled that 0.702 g of hash oil was found in the luggage of the athlete. She added that in the course of the investigation and the trial no circumstances were established that aggravated or mitigated the guilt of Mrs Greiner. “I would ask the court to acquit my client, but if the court finds it impossible, then I consider it necessary to impose a punishment taking into account Greiner’s personality, the role she played in the development of Russian basketball, and assign her a more lenient sentence using Article 64 of the Criminal Code (below the lowest provided for by the articles of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation imputed to her) and 73 of the Criminal Code (conditionally),” said the lawyer of the athlete Maria Blagovolina (quoted from “Interfax”).
Brittney Greiner, 31, was detained in February at Sheremetyevo Airport with a vape liquid that contained cannabis oil. In Russia, it is considered a drug, and in the United States it is legalized in many states. The athlete herself admitted the presence of hash oil, but stated that she did not sell drugs. She clarified that she kept it for personal use.
In May, CNN reported on a possible exchange of Brittney Griner for Russian Viktor Bout, who is serving a 25-year sentence in an American prison for illegal arms trafficking and terrorist financing. On July 29, the exchange of prisoners was discussed by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken. According to the US State Department, Greiner was also discussed in the conversation.
Brittney Greiner is a two-time Olympian and two-time World Champion with Team USA. She is included in the list of the 25 best players in the women’s NBA. Since 2015, he has been playing for the Yekaterinburg UMMC basketball club.
