The population of Germany exceeded 84 million people due to refugees from Ukraine

Germany’s population topped 84 million in the first half of this year. The increase is primarily due to the wave of refugees from Ukraine. This was announced on September 27 by the German Federal Statistical Office – Destatis.

In the most populous member state of the European Union, the population exceeded 84 million for the first time.

According to Destatis, at the end of the first half of this year, that is, on June 30, 84.079 million people lived in the country, which is 842 thousand, 1% more than a year earlier.

An increase of a similar magnitude has only been recorded twice since the country’s reunification in 1990. In 1992, the population increased by 700 thousand people, mainly due to the wave of refugees that began because of the wars in the territory of the former Yugoslavia, and in 2015 – by 978 thousand people as a result of the wave of refugees from Syria.

This year’s growth can also be explained primarily by a wave of refugees, migration from Ukraine. Registered net immigration – the difference between the number of immigrants and emigrants is 750 thousand people.

If we consider the German population as a whole, then women make up a slight majority. Their number exceeds 42.6 million, men – 41.4 million people. The number of women increased by 526,000 or 1.2% in six months, which is significantly more than the number of men, which increased by 317,000, or 0.8%.

These data reflect the fact that mostly women and children are fleeing Ukraine, Destatis explained, adding that at the end of June there were 501,000 Ukrainian women living in Germany more than at the end of last year, while for men, the increase was barely half as much – 248 thousand

In the first six months of this year, the population of all 16 German states increased. The largest (1.3%) was in Berlin, the first hub on the path of refugees who usually arrive through Poland, and the smallest (0.7%) was in the Saarland, the region furthest from the Polish border.
