The Pope met with Bishop Hilarion of the Russian Orthodox Church – Kommersant

Pope Francis met with Metropolitan Hilarion of Budapest and Hungary, reported France24. The meeting took place during the visit of the pontiff to the Hungarian capital. Until June 2022, Metropolitan Hilarion (Alfeev) headed the Department for External Church Relations (DECR) of the Moscow Patriarchate.

It is reported that the Pope and Metropolitan Hilarion talked for about 20 minutes. The pontiff called the meeting “cordial”. The TV channel did not disclose the details of the conversation.

On June 7, the Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church released Metropolitan Hilarion from the leadership of the DECR of the Moscow Patriarchate. Later, Hilarion said that he was dismissed due to changes in the socio-political situation.
