The Pentagon called the unintentional strike of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on the prison in Yelenovka

If Kyiv attacked the detention center with Ukrainian prisoners of war, then this was done unintentionally. This was stated by a high-ranking representative of the US Department of Defense, RIA Novosti reports.

On Friday, the Deputy Minister of Information of the Donetsk People’s Republic, Daniil Bezsonov, said that the Armed Forces of Ukraine fired at a prison in the village of Yelenovka. Then the Russian Defense Ministry confirmed the strike and reported 40 dead Ukrainian prisoners of war and 75 wounded. The death toll later rose to 53.

“If it was a strike from the Ukrainian side, I assure you, they didn’t want to do it,” a Pentagon spokesman said.

The Investigative Committee opened a criminal case on the fact of the strike. According to the Investigative Committee, the Ukrainian side used shells from the American HIMARS multiple launch rocket system to shell the detention center.
