The Russian Ministry of Defense plans to strengthen the air defense of the main carriers of the Kalibr cruise missiles, the Buyan-M ships. They are going to be improved with the help of the most advanced anti-aircraft missile and artillery complex “Pantsir-M”, sources in the Russian Ministry of Defense report.
“The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation is studying the issue of arming small missile ships of Project 21631 Buyan-M with the latest Pantsir-M anti-aircraft missile and artillery systems (ZRAK), sources told the Izvestia newspaper. Experts from the military-industrial complex noted to the publication that such a measure would protect ships not only from aviation, but also from anti-ship missiles and precision weapons.
The newspaper’s experts also note that the Pantsir-M shipborne air defense system is the most advanced anti-aircraft missile and artillery weapon in this area. The naval version of the Pantsir-S1 complex can hit a target flying at an altitude of one meter to one and a half tens of kilometers. It is noted that the Pantsir-M radar station serves targets at a distance of up to 75 kilometers, and the complex itself can protect the ship from air attacks within a radius of 40 km and 15 km in height.
In summer RT TV channel said that Pantsir-M would be in demand for at least ten years. It is clarified that this is the only air defense weapon with a single-post combat module, which includes artillery, anti-aircraft missile weapons and a control system.
