The Japan Self-Defense Forces conducted large-scale exercises with firing at the firing range near the slopes of Fuji in Shizuoka Prefecture, TASS reports today, May 28.
According to the agency, during the maneuvers, a total of about 57 tons of ammunition worth more than 1 billion yen (over $ 7 million) were used up.
2,500 military personnel were involved in the exercises. According to legend, the Japanese military had to respond to an enemy invasion of a remote Japanese island. First, helicopters and reconnaissance drones were sent to the site, after which amphibious assault units advanced.
The annual Fuji slopes maneuvers are normally open to the public, but have been held behind closed doors in recent years due to the coronavirus pandemic. This year they are also being held behind closed doors to focus on national security issues and not waste time arranging access for civilian visitors.
