The head of the Pentagon expressed concern about the military operation of Turkey in Syria

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, in a telephone conversation with Turkish counterpart Hulusi Akar, expressed concern about the situation in northern Syria and Turkish airstrikes on the positions of Kurdish paramilitaries.

“He expressed concern about the escalation of hostilities in northern Syria, including recent airstrikes, some of which directly threatened the safety of the US military, which is working with local partners to defeat ISIS (Islamic State, a terrorist organization banned in the Russian Federation),” – the message says.

Austin “called for a de-escalation and announced the department’s strong opposition to a new Turkish military operation in Syria.”

At the same time, the American minister “confirmed the importance of the strategic relationship between the United States and Turkey.”

As reported, the Turkish Air Force attacked the positions of the Kurdish paramilitary forces of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in northern Syria and Iraq. The strikes were in response to the November 13 terrorist attack in Istanbul, which killed six and injured more than 80 people. Ankara blamed the attack on the Kurds.

President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated that he would “eradicate terrorism that poses a threat to Turkish security”, including through a ground operation in Syria.
